Sandcatchers, Wednesday, Dec 18, 8-10 pm at Erv’s, 2122 Beekman Place
Americana/Middle Eastern vibe with oud, lap steel guitar, percussion, and bass. SANDCATCHERS is a Middle Eastern-Americana mash-up that grew from a weekly residency at Cheryl’s Global Soul restaurant in Brooklyn. The quartet, featuring experimental guitarist and composer Yoshie Fruchter (John Zorn’s Tzadik Records) and Michael Bates, accomplished jazz bassist with a punk background, explores the unique combination of the oud, an instrument that goes back centuries to pre-Islamic Persia and Turkey, and the lap steel guitar, a more recent invention with roots in the American South. Together, the musicians bring their varying backgrounds, specialties, and improvisational voices to create a vibrant new sound.
Yoshie Fruchter: oud; Raphael McGregor: lapsteel; Michael Bates: double bass; Shai Wetzer: drums/percussion.
