The Second Sunday Series, sponsored by the Inkwell and PLG Arts, will have it’s second event on June 14th between 1 and 3pm. The concert will feature music by h2f2, an improv-based flute and piano duo, preceded by classical solos and duos performed by Anne Dearth and h2f2 member, Nicolas Handahl. The Second Sunday series is part of the Parkside Plaza programming.
Second Sundays in Summer is part of the regular programming at the new, public Parkside Plaza, corner of Parkside and Ocean avenues, where you’ll be greeted by flowers, trees, tables, and chairs.
Nicholas Handahl (h2f2, flute) is a conductor and flute player based in Brooklyn. he holds flute degrees from UW Eau Claire (Timothy Lane) in his native Wisco, and NYU Steinhardt (Robert Dick). Past engagements include conducting at the Luzerne Music Center in upstate NY, performing as soloist with the NYU symphony, and touring with Ijoa in Germany. as an improviser, Nic appears in the quartet “pretzel club” and in the duo “h2f2.” Upcoming engagements include conducting the rt9 string ensemble, a recital series back in the midwest, and attending the Atlantic Music Festival as a student conductor.
Allen Fogelsanger (h2f2, piano) is a composer, educator, consultant, computer programmer, improviser and accompanist specializing in music for dance. He teaches and accompanies at Purchase College, Marymount Manhattan College, New York University, ballet arts and freelance, and previously served as director of music for dance at Cornell University. He received a phD from Cornell in mathematics and is completing a MM degree in music technology at NYU. Fogelsanger’s music, alone and as part of dances, videos and installations, has been presented in the Americas, Europe and Australia.
Anne Dearth is a flutist and music teacher in New York City. She has appeared with Symphony Z, Contemporaneous, the W4 New Music Collective, the Open Music Ensemble, and with various NYU ensembles. She has participated in the Bang on a Can Marathon, the Tribeca New Music Festival, Iota Festival, and the Lower East Side Music Festival. Anne particularly enjoys working closely with composers and has premiered multiple works written expressly for her, most recently “Shame” for speaking alto flutist by Jesse Diener-Bennett. Hailing from Dearborn, MI, Anne studied with Amy Porter at the University of Michigan before coming to New York to study at NYU with Robert Dick.
