Please note: this group has been moved from its usual date because of the Thanksgiving holiday.
Led by Greenlight bookseller Austin, our fiction book group in Prospect Lefferts Gardens reads and discusses paperback fiction, reading broadly in contemporary fiction with the occasional diversion into classics. For November, the group discusses LaRose by Louise Erdrich. Set in North Dakota, on an Ojibwa reservation, the novel’s protagonist is LaRose Iron, a young Native American boy. His father, Landreaux Iron, accidentally shoots LaRose’s best friend and neighbor, Dusty Ravich in a hunting accident. To compensate Dusty’s parents for their loss, following an ancient custom, LaRose’s parents give him to Dusty’s family. In this literary masterwork, Louise Erdrich wields her breathtaking narrative magic in an emotionally haunting contemporary tale of a tragic accident, a demand for justice, and a profound act of atonement with ancient roots in Native American culture.
